MDC in October 1993 held a working conference to reflect on the South's rural development experience of the past decade. Our goal was to help local and regional development organizations, foundations, and state policymakers gain insight into approaches that can foster economic development and reduce poverty in the rural South.
Building upon the discussions and ideas generated from that conference, MDC published Time to Get Cookin' in the South in January 1994. The report summarizes issues raised in the conference that needed to be understood and more widely debated by people working on economic and community development throughout the South.
Key funders included the Ford Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the James C. Penney Foundation.
