MDC catalyzes systemic change by helping communities organize to enable collaboration. Working together, community partners can focus their resources strategically so that everyone in the community, particularly those at the margins, can succeed in – and through – education, employment and economic security.

MDC’s place-based approach, developed over decades, forms, coaches, trains and assists community partnerships of business, government, education and nonprofit leaders and institutions to help them create lasting, systemic change

MDC at Work

Danville, Virginia, Economic Development

We’ve helped this community over 20 years transform itself from a struggling manufacturing town to a thriving one with computer software firms, major employers, such as IKEA, and biofuels research companies.

Health Care Navigators

We helped a coalition of health care and legal aid organizations secure federal grants and mobilize to connect uninsured households with Affordable Care Act health insurance and financial assistance, leading North Carolina to post the fourth-highest number of enrollments in the nation.

Program for the Rural Carolinas

MDC managed this program for The Duke Endowment to help economically distressed communities in rural North Carolina and South Carolina revitalize their communities through employment and asset development.

Rural Community College Initiative

The Ford Foundation invited MDC to manage this eight-year initiative to strengthen rural community colleges, helping 24 community and tribal colleges in the nation's most economically distressed regions move their people and communities toward prosperity. An independent evaluation cited the initiative for its  innovation and impact.
