MDC expresses condolences on the passing of Professor Joel Fleishman

With deep sadness, we express our condolences on the passing of Joel L. Fleishman, a friend of MDC and a prominent figure in law, public policy, and philanthropy. Professor Fleishman passed away on September 30, 2024, at the age of 90.

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Professor Fleishman made significant contributions to both his home state and the nation. His long and distinguished career began at Yale and included serving as a legal assistant to the Governor of North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, who created MDC as part of the North Carolina Fund. In 1971, he joined the Duke University faculty and was instrumental in founding what is now the Sanford School of Public Policy. Professor Fleishman’s impact on philanthropy is reflected in his writings, including his book *The Foundation: A Great American Secret*, which explored the transformative role of private philanthropy in society.

“MDC is grateful for Joel’s friendship and contributions to the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, which have had a lasting impact on equity and economic mobility—values at the center of MDC’s mission,” said MDC President and CEO John L. S. Simpkins. “Joel’s life’s work reflected his commitment to his home state, his faith, and the betterment of humankind. He exemplified the term ‘humanitarian.’”

We extend our deepest sympathies to Professor Fleishman’s family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy will continue to inspire us all.
