Our poverty rate remains stubbornly high – although still only half of that in the Rust Belt’s economically ravaged Cleveland and Detroit. Unemployment is widespread in lower socioeconomic groups. Durham think-tank MDC has documented the corrosive effect of “disconnected youth,” failed by our education system and social safety net and facing few if any prospects of achieving a stable and prosperous life.
MDC’s “Made in Durham” initiative to reconnect those youth could have truly profound consequences.
